You can prepare Nomina Outdoor porridge using only hot water. The cornerstone are grains such as oat, barley and wholegrain spelt. These are complemented by coconut oil powder. The coconut oil standardly contains over 50% of fatty acids with long or medium hydrocarbon chain. Such fats constitute a convenient, fast energy source for the body with no effect on the glycaemia. You will have Nomina Outdoor ready in a few minutes, and it will give you the strength you need for your hike. The nutritional value of the porridge is, of course, increased by the content of both soluble and insoluble fibre. Each serving crunches with 5 g of chia seeds.

How to prepare

You can prepare Nomina Outdoor in a bowl or in a mug mixing the package contents in about 240 ml of hot water, or you can prepare it before the trip and bring it in a thermos flask. Just mix it well and wait for 4-5 minutes. You can also add a piece of fresh fruit from your backpack (apple, tangerine, banana) or a handful of raspberries or blueberries you gather along the path. That will make the porridge really yummy.

On of the ingredients of Nomina Outdoor is barley.  This crop has been present in the human diets for centuries. It is a documented fact that ancient gladiators were fed barley porridge. Even though the terminology was different back then, it must have been due to its nutritional qualities. Barley is a source of complex carbohydrates, quality protein, B and E vitamins and numerous minerals.

Another ingredient is oat. The fibre of both barley and oat consists of a balanced ratio between the soluble and insoluble content. There is a significant carbohydrate part of the insoluble fibre called the beta-glucans, and these are valued for their positive effect on the body. The spelt wheat is also valued for its positive effect on the body with its fibre content improving the digestive tract function.

Wholegrain rice, commonly known as natural rice in our country, is partially dehusked rice. Compared with the dehusked white rice, it retains far more B vitamins as well as more of the desirable minerals (iron, magnesium and phosphorus) and, of course, fibre.

Chia seeds contain over 30% fibre in both its soluble and insoluble form. The content of fat is about 30%, a large percentage of which are unsaturated fatty acids. The seeds are also valued for their protein and mineral content. These Salvia hispanica seeds fantastically complement the other ingredients from the nutritional perspective making the porridge a healthy and nutritious snack not only while travelling.

Despite its undisputed qualities, the porridge is NOT SUITABLE FOR COELIACS AND A GLUTEN-FREE DIET.
